In short
A cooking timer counts down a set time and rings loudly enough to hear over a hob. This page opens at 10 minutes and takes any length; the tab title counts down too, so you can check without picking anything up.
- Default
- 10 minutes
- Soft boiled egg
- 5 to 6 minutes
- Boiling potatoes
- About 10 minutes
- Roasting vegetables
- About 20 minutes
- Two at once
- Open a second tab — each counts independently
The three things worth timing in a kitchen
Things that overcook fast. Pasta, greens, fish, garlic. Seconds matter and there is no undo.
Things you will forget. Anything in the oven while you deal with the rest of the meal. This is where most burnt dinners come from.
Rests. Meat off the heat, dough proving, batter standing. Nothing looks like it is happening, which is exactly why people cut it short.
Times worth knowing
| Time | Common jobs |
|---|---|
| 3 min | Soft boiled egg, steeping black tea, blanching greens |
| 5 min | Simmering sauces, resting a steak, French press coffee |
| 10 min | Boiling potatoes, rice off the heat, steaming vegetables |
| 20 min | Roasting vegetables, traybakes, brown rice |
| 30 min | Whole chicken pieces, casseroles, slow bakes |
Timing two things at once
Open this page in a second browser tab and each tab runs its own countdown, with the remaining time shown in the tab title. Bookmarking a couple of duration pages — say 10 minutes and 20 minutes — makes that a two-click setup.
Questions about the cooking timer
Is the alarm loud enough over an extractor fan?
It plays three rising tones at full volume for the device. Over a noisy hob, turn the device volume up before you start and keep it out of the splash zone but in the room.
Can I use it hands-free?
Mostly. Press the space bar to start and stop, which is easier than tapping a screen with wet hands, and put the device where the digits are readable from the hob.
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The countdown is measured against your device clock rather than counted by the page, so switching tabs or opening another app does not slow it down. The alarm sounds at zero as long as the tab is still open.
What data does the site collect?
None. No accounts, no cookies, no analytics and no advertising network, which is also why the timer does not remember your last setting between visits.
