Holds and home practice

Yoga timer

Thirty minutes for a full home practice, or set a short hold and let the alarm tell you when to switch sides. Either way, your eyes stay off the clock.

Practice

30:00

Shortcuts: space start or pause · R reset · F fullscreen. The alarm rings even if you switch tabs.

In short

A yoga timer counts pose holds or a whole home practice so you are not tracking time yourself. This page opens at 30 minutes; for poses held on both sides, the interval timer alternates hold and switch automatically.

Default practice
30 minutes
Active poses in a flow
30 to 60 seconds
Yin and restorative holds
2 to 5 minutes
Savasana
5 to 10 minutes

Timing a hold

Long holds are where restorative and yin practice live, and they are exactly the situation in which your sense of time is least reliable — two minutes in pigeon feels like six. Set the hold, and the counting stops being your job.

For poses done on both sides, the interval timer is the better tool: set work to the hold length, rest to your transition time, and rounds to twice the number of poses.

Common lengths

  • 30–60 seconds — active poses in a flow
  • 2–5 minutes — yin and restorative holds
  • 5–10 minutes — savasana, or a supported restorative pose
  • 20–60 minutes — a whole home practice, so you know when to move to closing

Ending well

The temptation in home practice is to skip savasana and get on with the day. Set five or ten minutes for it, turn the sound down to a soft finish, and let the timer make the decision — it is the part of the practice most often cut and least worth cutting.

Questions about the yoga timer

Should the alarm be loud during yoga?

Lower your device volume before you start, or press Sound off and watch for the screen to change. A startling noise at the end of a restorative hold rather defeats the purpose.

Can I time a whole class?

Yes — set the full length and press Fullscreen if you are teaching, so the room can see how long is left in the practice.

Does it need an internet connection?

Only to load the page the first time. After that the site is cached on your device, so it opens and runs offline, and losing the connection mid-countdown changes nothing.

Can I use it at work, in a gym or in a classroom?

Yes, without restriction. Project it, put it on a shared screen, or link to it — there is no licence to buy and no commercial-use limit.
