In short
A meeting timer puts a visible countdown on the shared screen so the meeting ends itself rather than someone having to call time. This page opens at 30 minutes. Timeboxing each agenda item separately is what stops one item eating the hour.

Time the items, not just the meeting
Meetings do not overrun evenly — one item eats the hour and the last three get two minutes each. Timeboxing each agenda item fixes that, and it makes the trade-offs visible while there is still time to make them.
- Share the agenda with a length against each item — timeboxing each one separately.
- Start a countdown at the top of each one.
- When it rings, decide: extend deliberately, or park it and move on.
- Parked items go on a list with an owner, not into the void.
Suggested lengths
| Meeting | Length |
|---|---|
| Stand-up | 10–15 min |
| One to one | 25–30 min |
| Working session | 45–60 min |
| Decision meeting | 30 min, with the decision named in the invitation |
| Retro or review | 60 min, timeboxed by section |
Finishing early is a feature
Set the timer for five minutes less than the slot and use what is left to write down decisions and owners while everyone is still in the room. That five minutes is worth more than the discussion it replaces, and it is the reason people stop dreading the meeting.
Questions about the meeting timer
Does this work for remote meetings?
Share your screen with the timer in fullscreen, or open it on a second monitor and call out the checkpoints. Everyone seeing the same countdown is what makes it work.
Is a visible timer rude?
Handled openly it is the opposite — it says everyone's time is being respected. Announce it at the start rather than starting it silently when someone is speaking too long.
Can I pause and come back to it later?
Yes. The same button pauses and resumes, and the space bar does both. Pausing holds the exact remaining time until you start it again.
Is there an app to install?
Not one you need. The page runs in any browser, though you can add it to a phone or tablet home screen if you would rather it opened like an app.
